I planned this to be a leisure day of taking an Uber boat up the Thames to spend the day at Greenwich to just wander around and explore. The subway, busses and even the Uber boat are all so easy to use by just using credit card to tap in and tap out. Although busses you only need to tap in.
There were very few people on the boat, maybe 10. We enjoyed the peaceful ride up the Thames.
We got off at the Greenwich pier, the Cutty Sark ship is right there. It is the world's only surviving extreme clipper built to transport tea from China, maiden voyage was 1869 London to Shanghai.
We made our way to the Old Royal Naval Academy, now houses Greenwich University, to see the Painted Hall which is compared to a small Sistine Chapel, it was originally built for an eating space for pensioners who lived at the Royal Hospital. The Painted Hall, along with the grounds of the Old Royal Academy, have been used for many movies and films such as Bridgerton, The Crown, Les Mis..... We had a nice little tour of the Painted Hall but we somehow missed the Chapel. After we realized it it was already closed.
We walked around the charming streets of Greenwich and made our way to Greenwich market having lunch there. Ethiopian food for me, Asian for Dave. Then a stop at a very cute tiny spot for some to go sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. It was to die for!
We made our way to Greenwich park, wandered around and took in the views.
Then found the Queens House and explored it before catching the Uber boat back.
After getting back Dave decided we should find Abby Road Studios, where the Beatles had their recording studio and see the famous cross walk from the album cover. We took the subway and walked a few blocks trying to decide where the studio was, then we noticed several people stopping traffic to take pictures of the iconic cross walk. Of course we had to do the same thing!
After doing a little shopping in the Abby Roads gift shop we wandered back through the lovely neighborhood to the subway stop.
We then stopped at Convent Gardens neighborhood to once again try and get into Dishoom for dinner. The line was long but we decided to wait. The line moved fairly fast only having to wait about 45 minutes. The time went fast as we chatted with a local young lady and her dad who was visiting her from New Zealand. She loves this restaurant and told us her favorites. Dinner was great, we took her suggestions and had black dal and Chicken Ruby, and had amazing vegetable koftas as a starter. The restaurant was beautiful. I obviously enjoyed because I forgot to take pictures!
It was a great day, we enjoyed not having to be anywhere at a specific time and just go and make random last minute choices.
